My girlfriend's connection to Barack Obama

Posted by Craig Kanalley on 11/09/2008
There's been a lot of genealogy research done on Illinois Senator Barack Obama.

Now that he's been elected the 44th President of the United States, it's worth noting he isn't only distantly related to Dick Cheney, Princess Diana, and FDR.

He's also distantly related to my girlfriend, Nicole.

The connection comes through the Fitz Randolph's, an early American family that first settled in Massachusetts in the 1630's and goes back to royalty in England.

Both Nicole and President-Elect Obama descend of Edward Fitz Randolph and his wife Elizabeth Blossom, who lived in Massachusetts for some time before they died in Middlesex County, New Jersey in the late 17th century and early 18th century.

Blossom herself was born in Holland, but only because her parents were Pilgrims, English natives who were escaping religious persecution. Her parents later settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

It's an interesting family. This diagram shows the relationship between my girlfriend and the next president of the United States quite well.

Hi,

Nice post. I like the way you show the relationship. I would like to know more about how you do that and where you got the obama data. If you can, share a bit about your method (I must confess i didn't read all your previous posts so maybe you did allready and I'm just lazy...)

thanks

Hello Willem,

Thanks for the comment. Obama's ancestry has already been well documented. Much of his family tree can be found on the site: WorldConnect RootsWeb. Be careful of accuracy because anyone can submit information there, but some files are very well sourced and I used these.

Also, the Fitz Randolph family from which both Obama and my girlfriend come from is very well documented, early colonial American family.

Hello, I am too a member of the Fitz Randolph family. I am from the second Edward FitzRandolp son of Nathanial Fitzrandolph. Obmama's mother is Ann Dunham. I claim her as my cousin...not so much her son.
